History

Originally built in the 13th Century, the inn was damaged by fire and rebuilt with a timber frame around 1560. Further renovations were done after another fire in 1751 and in about 1908 the accommodation was expanded with the addition of a new brick wing.

It’s a very convenient location, close to Stonehenge and on the main route from the west country to London, and means that we have hosted many famous guests. For example, the Duke of Wellington – victor at the Battle of Waterloo – was a vacationer at The George in 1816; in 1848 the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, with his travel companion the Scottish born writer and philosopher Thomas Carlyle, booked accommodation at The George for their tour to Stonehenge; and British textile designer, William Morris, was also a guest at the George in August 1879.

During the English Civil War, The George became an overnight stay and headquarters for the Parliamentary commander-in-chief Thomas Fairfax. During World War I, it served as an officers mess until military buildings were ready in nearby Boscombe Down.
